About AussieVoIP

What is AussieVoIP?

The owner of AussieVoIP, Rob Thomas (aka xrobau – that’s ‘X Rob Au’), was the original author of FreePBX, many years ago.

Over the next 20-ish years, Rob has been deeply involved with it, even though it has been sold to various companies over the years. Currently, it is owned by Sangoma Technologies Canada.

Through all those changes, Rob had been watching what worked, and what didn’t. This let him build AussieVoIP, which is a large and reliable network in Australia, designed from the ground up to handle Telephony traffic – specifically FreePBX and related Open Source phone systems.

Because we care about quality and reliability, we own our own hardware. This means we’re not at the mercy of a cloud provider if they go down. Everything is run and managed in house, which lets us be confident that we are as reliable and fault tolerant as possible.

But it’s not just hardware – we also run our own network connections, including interconnects and peering links over dedicated fibre-optic links.

Why do we care so much? Because our reputation is our life. Our goal is to provide phone services, and even more importantly 000 services, under all possible circumstances.

A prime example of this was provided during the Rockhampton Floods of 2017, where we were the only provider who was still able to provide telephony services! All mobile carriers were down, and even old Landlines could not connect to emergency services. Due to our multiple redundant connections, our customers (who had Internet access through us) were able to make and receive phone calls.
